SVBAQ Jacob's Ladder

I enjoyed this block much more than I originally thought I would. I did not like the three big leaves in the center flower at first. But, I decided to stick with Esther’s plan this time and take my chances. Perhaps because my block is so much smaller than the original, I didn’t mind the big blocky leaves after all.

That center flower looked like a Trillium to me so I tried to find a print that would look more white than the gray in the original. I used this wonderful print that I often use as a background. However, when I was finished with the applique I found it was too white so I took my Pigma pen and filled in more red dots (sort of hand made picotage!). I love the way it came out.

I have since found out that it might be a Confederate Violet. So named because of the similarity in color to the Confederate uniform. So, my coloration is way out of whack. I still like mine and I’m sure Esther would approve even though I am a Yankee.

I’m not sure what the little floaty flower on the top is, but I suspect Esther just wanted to fill the space, so I followed suit.

Be sure to check out all the wonderful blocks this month (here).

  1. Your version of this quilt is going to be so beautiful, Wendy. And this block is quilted, too! Are all the previous blocks quilted now? Can't wait to see it all together!

  2. You do such beautiful, meticulous work! Everything about this block looks so precise, in a handmade sort of way. : )
Very clever putting the dots on the flower with the Pigma pen. Those pens have saved me on many occasions.

  3. Very pretty block. Like that you made a Trillium and added your own picotage. It was the perfect solution!

  4. I love hearing how you make each block your own. Are you buried in snow so no Trillium could even show its flowery head?

  7. Such a pretty block and lovely quilting! Great solution for your fabric issue. Sometimes you think you have chosen just the perfect fabrics, but then they don't quite work.

  8. Your block is stunning!
    Your Trillium is beautiful.
You may be surprised to know that Esther was a patriot in support of the Union of the United States. The confederacy issue was a complicated issue for many in the Valley.

  13. You are right on schedule with your blocks. Me.....no. I just finished last month's block. The current block is such an interesting design. So different from other blocks. I like your solution for what you describe as a too white piece of fabric. Good finish.
